The SRECA strives to provide opportunities for all residents to participate, no matter what your interests. From physical activities to mental challenges there is something for everyone!

Below is a description of regular, recurring activities that are available. We also schedule other events throughout the year, including day trips, theatre nights and opportunities to travel. Be sure to check back often for new opportunities to stay active and involved in Scripps Ranch.

Classes and More

All classes are held at the Scripps Ranch Community Center unless otherwise noted.

Exercise classes

Every Tuesday, 10:00 - 10:30 a.m.
Scripps Ranch Community Center

SRECA is privileged to have Ali Ghalebi as our instructor. Ali has a background in physical therapy and the workouts he leads feature moves geared to the over-55 crowd. Using a mind-body approach, you will benefit with increased flexibility, reduced stress and an overall feeling of well-being.

Tai Chi for Seniors

Every Thursday, 1:15 - 2:30 p.m.
Scripps Ranch Library community room

SRECA and Master Parker invite you to come and enjoy a fun-filled class, and reap the many benefits of Tai Chi. Master Parker Linekin has been a Scripps Ranch resident since 1992. His Academy of the Martial Arts, where he teaches Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Kung Fu and other ancient disciplines, has been in operation since 1997. He earned his PHD in Tai Chi through the White Tiger Kung Fu Association and is an active spokesperson for the mental, emotional and physical benefits of that popular and widespread practice.

Master Parker has specialized in Tai Chi for Seniors for the past twenty years and his teachings include standing, walking and chair practices. He writes that Tai Chi builds a stronger body through these soft movements, and is said to help with the control of many ailments, such as high blood pressure. Tai Chi improves physical balance and mental focus and has been found to be helpful in recovering from injuries and operations.

Silver Age Yoga class and research project

Wednesdays - Research project-2:00 p.m., Class -3:00 p.m.
Scripps Ranch Library community room

The research portion will start at 2:00 pm and the actual yoga class will start at 3:00 pm. Seniors do not need to be a part of the research project to take the yoga class.

Drum circle

Second and fourth Wednesday of each month, 10:00 a.m. - noon
Scripps Ranch Community Center

Activities Coordinator, Nita Smith, leads the hand drumming class in Scripps Ranch. Nita has researched and written papers on the benefits resulting from the practice of hand drumming. Some of these benefits include: enhanced psychological and spiritual well-being, enhanced physical well-being, enhanced social relationships, enhanced sensory awareness and physical dexterity and improved self-esteem, and confidence. Not only that, but it's just plain fun. So don't be shy, come out and join us and see for yourself why this is quickly becoming one of the most popular activities offered by the SRECA.

Scrabble

Every Wednesday, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Love words and board games? Then this activity is for you. Bev Vasconcellos, who has led Scrabble games at the Poway Senior Center, will make sure you're matched up with players of your same skill level and will help you improve your skills, or even teach you the game. Scrabble is a popular and enjoyable game that challenges your mind and is easy to learn.

Ongoing lecture series - Aging Successfully in Scripps Ranch

First Wednesday of the month, 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. at the Scripps Ranch Library

This continuing series of lectures, "Successfully Aging in Scripps Ranch," addresses a variety of topics of interest to seniors. Past topics include maintaining your brain, memory loss and elder abuse. Lectures are free for SRECA members, or $5 per person for non-members.

Theatre Trips

Next date: October 2, 2010

You are invited to join SRECA friends for a fun evening of dinner at Chin's Szechwan Restaurant and a Scripps Ranch Theatre production of  "Social Security",  a hilarious comedy by Andrew Bergman.  The play is about the shattering of yuppie bliss, the timelessness of romance and an aged Jewish mother who turns her children's lives upside down in the nicest way.  "... you can laugh out loud joyfully ... for the play is a hoot and better yet, a sophisticated hoot."  N.Y. Post.

Dinner is at 6:00 pm.  The play starts at 8:00 pm.  Dr. Fred Orton is coordinating this event for SRECA.    If you are a SEASON Ticket Holder, all you need do is notify Dr. Orton  that you want to attend by email at muneyman81@hotmail.com or 619-384-5052 and he will do the rest! If you're NOT a Season Ticket Holder, notify Dr. Orton by e-mail or phone and send a check payable to Fred Orton for $20 (GROUP RATE) for each ticket to: 10476 Scripps Trail; San Diego, CA. 92131-2336. His receipt of your check CONFIRMS your reservation(s).   Maps are available on request for you or your guests.   Transportation is available by SRECA volunteers.  Please contact Dr. Orton soon since space is filling fast.
